Govans Community Farm started with two garden spaces on the property of Govans Presbyterian Church. The church community began researching the church’s role in Baltimore’s history of racial injustice and wanted to reconcile those injustices with current anti-racist actions, including a farm on 1/3 acre which would be diverse, equitable and inclusive, with the intention of inviting all members of the surrounding communities to share the management and bounty of the farm. With the support of partners and supporters, including Nature Sacred, we have been able to expand our growing operation. We want the farm to be environmentally responsible, spiritually engaging, and health promoting to all people in a central location in North Baltimore. We currently produce tomatoes and other nightshades, many types of brassicas, root vegetables and herbs. Zinnias and marigolds surround the gardens and we are starting to farm the front lawn in raised beds.
Our mission is to create a place of purpose, learning and connection, a place of equality and racial justice, welcoming to all. The farm should spark joy and amazement, encourage people to connect with nature, and demonstrate love. Using gardening to support learning, the farm offers space to celebrate personal and cultural history and growth.
