The Mount Washington Arboretum Community Vegetable Garden (MWACVG) is managed and enjoyed by Mount Washington families who love getting together to appreciate each other, the sun, the soil, and the joy of growing their own food. The garden is located on an old residential lot with approximately 2,000 sqft of plantable area. Decisions about what is grown, and how we work, are made together in order to fully harness the knowledge, skills and diversity of all involved. We consider the garden to be a “grow lab” where everyone is learning. In addition to growing fresh produce, we explore the ways that an urban garden can enrich the community and environment by creating a beautiful space that promotes education and supports pollinators. The garden is supported by member dues and the Mount Washington Preservation Trust.
Our garden uses no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We also have permaculture projects that reduce waste and integrate the garden with the surrounding ecosystem. The garden is a community resource for learning about permaculture approaches to gardening that nourish bodies while respecting and protecting the environment.
